Based on the voyage of Christopher Columbus and the Mayflower, this slot is a Novomatic classic. It has since been given updated graphics in Columbus Deluxe, though the game-play is essentially the same between the two versions. This is a 9 win-line slot, and includes wild symbols, scatters and a free spins round. It does feel dated compared to the more modern interactive slots you’ll find these days. What you will notice as soon as you play is that these old classics are very playable – certainly more than just historical novelties.

Like all Novomatic slots, the standard sound effects library is in use on top of some rather odd sounding computer generated tunes for the free spins feature. This can be disabled, and includes the insane beeping (to my ears at least) when the reels spin. The ‘clunk’ of when the reels stop mimics the mechanical originals, at least this noise is reasonably satisfying. Graphically, this game is dated looking with blocky pictures on plain white reels, there are some basic animations when one of the major symbols makes a winning combination.

Free spins does include a different coloured Mayflower picture which become wild. This is a basic game; you’ll simply have your spins and go back to the main reels again. The overall RTP of this slot is comparatively generous – clocking in at 97.03%.

There are 9 win lines available, and while most players stick to the maximum, you are free to choose any number you wish. Minimum bets for all 9 are 2c, giving a small 18c minimum spin and $45 per spin at the top end. You can choose to play up to 50 spins automatically with the auto-spin feature – though this will take away your ability to gamble (red / black) the smaller wins.

Columbus himself is the symbol you’ll want to see the most. He is worth 5000 coins for a set of 5, and 1000 coins for 4. Next comes a Queen (might be Elizabeth the 1st), who is worth 1000 coins for 5 of a kind. A jewelled necklace and ships compass make up the rest of the regular symbols. Playing cards, ace down to ten, make up the smaller wins.

In the regular game the Mayflower (ship) against a blue sky and sea is the scatter symbol. Three or more of these will trigger the free spins bonus round.

This feature is 10 free spins with many extra wilds. Columbus and the new twilight Mayflower symbol now substitute for the other symbols – massively increasing the number of wins compared to the base game. You can retrigger the bonus with 3 of the ship symbols. Each win gives you the chance to gamble. At the end of the feature round you are shown the total of what you won and simply return to playing the normal game.
While these old style video slots will not be everyone’s first choice, I still recommend that you give them a try. Back when the technology could not support video clips and break out bonus features, the programming had to be more focused on gameplay. Seeing a good example of this in action can make you understand how online casino slot games have evolved over the years – and can be entertaining in their own right.

Columbus has a unique theme, a potentially big free spins bonus round and solid gameplay. I recommend you overlook the simple graphics and ideas, and take it for a spin.
